Welcome! I’m Matt Etherington.

I’m an advocate for disability, mental health, youth and migrant support asking for your vote in the Hobart City Council election.

I will work to create opportunity, inclusion, community and affordable housing for all the people who call this beautiful city home.

my vision for the city

If elected, my priorities are:

rebuilding trust in government through best-practice integrity reform.

triple-bottom-line planning for sustainable economic growth.

a truly accessible city with safety, community and inclusion at its heart.

breaking down barriers and bottlenecks for business to thrive.

safe, affordable housing through real enforcement mechanisms.

diverse, safe, modern and affordable transport solutions.

preparing for the future through innovation and long term planning.

greater community input with informed, transparent decision making.

Awards & Recognition

  • Gratefully, I was recognised in 2019 as the Tamanian Young Achiever of the Year for my work in mental health, disability support and youth empowerment. This has been a wonderful platform to work on social change and health reform - and has helped me empower other young leaders.

  • In 2019, I was Hobart Young Citizen of the Year for volunteering and lived experience advocacy in mental health and disability - as well as community education on migrant support.

  • I was the grateful recipient of the 2019 St. Lukes Health Healthier Communities Award for implementing innovative events and training in mental health, as well as using sport to help improve the lives of people experiencing disability and disadvantage.

  • In 2020, I gratefully received the Stay ChatTY Outstanding Contribution to Suicide Prevention by a Young Person Life Award. I share my lived experience of suicidal ideation to help others and educate the community on the role they can play.

  • In 2019, I received the Rural Health Tasmania Innovation in Mental, Social and Emotional Wellbeing Award for supporting the wellbeing of people in regional areas through innovative events and training.
